A Memoir of a Mother’s Determination and Her Micro Preemie’s Struggle to Beat the Odds
NICU reunions mark milestones and celebrate the achievements and successes of every baby that graduated in the past. Although most NICU graduates were born as preemies, many were born full term with serious health issues that they overcame.
The NICU reunion at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, NY was on Wednesday September 25, 2013. It was a beautiful day! Organizers planned activities for the whole family. There were bouncy houses, face painting, ice cream and even a magic show. My three boys enjoyed the day just as much as we did.
Joy got to visit with many of the NICU nurses and doctors (shown above) that saved her life and helped her grow into the healthy and happy baby that she is today. It was wonderful to see Joy interact with the NICU staff that cared for her. Many of them got to pick her up and see for themselves the success that they had a hand in.
It was equally wonderful to see many of the other families that we bonded with during Joy’s NICU stay and to see how big and healthy Joy’s old roommates are today! Each year all of the graduates and their families pose for a group picture that is then displayed in the halls of the NICU to show families how miracles can happen. This is a great tradition in which we got to participate in this year. We missed the NICU reunion last year because it was held just two weeks after Joy’s release and we were advised to stay home and avoid the crowd and the germs associated with them.
NICU reunions celebrate the incredible accomplishments and growth of each and every child that began their life under duress but continued on to success.
We are forever in debt to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital for what they have given our family and we cannot wait for the 2014 NICU reunion!
I would love to have you share your own NICU reunion experience with us!
